Description
This drip pan came from a Singer sewing machine cabinet with an 1879 patent date.It dates from a time when sewing machines were foot-powered instead of electric and a sewing machine “cabinet” was often just a flat board on a cast iron frame with a hole cut out for the machine to sit in, with maybe a drawer or two underneath. The drip pan mounted below the flat board kept oil and grease from dropping off the machine’s running gear onto the operator’s legs as he or she – usually she – worked the foot pedal.
Our cabinet had an 1884 Singer Model 12 “New Family” installed, but Singer used this style pan with a number of different machines, so the best way to figure out if it will work with your machine is measure it. Please take a look at photo three.
The pan measures thirteen-and-one-eighth inches on the longer side of the “U” shown at the bottom of photo three, measured as shown in photo four. The shorter leg is twelve-and-one-half inches in length and the pan is six-and-three-quarters inches across.
Photos five and six show a side view. The pan measures one-and-one-half inches deep at the lowest point inside. It has been cleaned but some ancient, dried lubricants still cling to the inside that our trusty degreaser couldn’t remove. (Dynamite might have been a better choice.) It is in very good condition, inside and out, and comes complete with the five original attachment screws shown in photo seven.
