Description
Modern sewing machines manufactured for home use have the familiar small round bobbin, but it wasn’t always that way.The very first sewing machines used a bullet-shaped bobbin case or “shuttle” that rode in a carrier or carriage like this one, moving back and forth beside the needle. Inside the bobbin case was a small bobbin that looked like a miniature dumbbell, and it worked in just the same way as the shuttle of a loom, weaving its thread back and forth horizontally at the same time as the needle weaved its thread vertically. This simple technology worked so well that Singer manufactured one family of “shuttle-style” sewing machines (Models VS1, VS2, VS3, 27, 28, 127 and 128) from the 1880s until the 1960s.
Singer Model 27 and 28 shuttles were held in place by a prong on the carriage (photo three) that fits into a “dent” on the shuttle’s pointed nose.
Fun Fact:
The most common Singer shuttle with that “dent” is number 8301.
These things are dirt magnets but my husband gets them looking good again by removing tons of gunk and grime and old hubcaps and bits of broken thread. (Well, maybe the old hubcaps part was an exaggeration, but these things are usually a mess when they come to us.) This shuttle has been cleaned and is ready to go to work, and the small attachment screw shown in the photos is included.
